CARIADS is a service that provides information, advice and support to carers in Thurrock. It has been created by three voluntary sector organisations, Thurrock Mind, Thurrock Lifestyle Solutions CIC and Thurrock Centre for Independent Living.  They have come together to offer help, advice and support to all the carers in the local community.

Help and support signpostAs a “carer” you are responsible for arranging and providing care for someone who cannot care for themselves.  You will be there for them giving emotional and practical support to ensure they maintain a decent quality of life.  You may have given up your job and future prospects to look after someone full time or you are juggling a career and your caring duties.   As strong as some people are we know over time this can take its toll on a person.

Many people do not plan to be carers but due to circumstances they are usually thrown into the deep end.  They don’t have the time to think about what’s involved and are not be aware of the support available. The majority of carers feel they are alone with no one to talk to and to understand their needs.

This is why Cariads was created.  We can provide carers with support and help find answers to questions they may have. We have access to many resources such as:

    Information and advice:

Would you like to know where to go for services, equipment, support – we make contacts with local service providers in order to put carers in touch with the right services to help them, i.e. assistance for odd jobs around the home, equipment to assist around the home, holidays for people with disabilities, medical advice.

    Help with carers assessments:

Sometimes completing forms can feel overwhelming.  We can support you with the paperwork and the process, assist in  making a referral and attend the meeting with you if required.

Training and Information sessions for carers:

We have taken on board carers concerns and feedback on what they would like to know more about.  We are running a variety of training / awareness sessions based on this feedback – such as dementia awareness, benefits awareness, mental health, power of attorney and much more.

    Support with Education:

For some carers a change in employment or training is needed.   We can support you in finding courses, the cost and help through the application process.

    Counselling:

We have access to a free counselling service, provided by Counsellors who are accredited or working towards accreditation with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Support in getting back to work:

If you are looking to get back to work, we can provide support and links with employment agencies.  If you are experiencing any difficulties whilst employed, we can support you in various ways.

    Respite / Outreach:

Providing information on what is available, the most appropriate place for your loved one depending on their needs, making the initial contact with social care for the assessment and helping you through this process.

    ……and much more
